Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans

The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward fans during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

Jones additionally clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

League Precedent for Owner Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples include:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, who is known for his media savvy, possesses an approximate net worth of around $16bn, making the penalty manageable for the billionaire proprietor.

Recent Controversies and Media Spotlight

The incident comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central subject in a streaming series that examined his role in developing the Cowboys into the globe’s highest-worth sports franchise, despite its recent title shortcomings.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing effort to uphold professional conduct among all team officials, irrespective of their position or wealth.
