The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
