No fewer than 13 individuals killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
