No other president would have dared – truly, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking large sections of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.

As bewildering as it is to witness the leader try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar.
